Somewhere on Reddit right now, a founder outside the US is asking the same question you are:
Has anyone successfully opened a US business bank account as a non-resident — without traveling to the US? I'm tired of Wise and PayPal. Fees. Delays. Limited control. Ideally online, no SSN, usable for global spending.
That is not a niche complaint. It is the default pain for freelancers and small businesses serving US clients in USD from abroad. Payment apps work… until they start feeling like the whole company is running on temporary scaffolding.
Short answer: Yes — many non-residents can prepare a remote US business banking path without an SSN and without flying to a branch. The modern path is usually a US LLC → EIN (no SSN) → US business mailing address → fintech business bank application. At OtoCo we form the company, help get the EIN, provide a virtual US mailing address, and prepare a Mercury application from your entity docs. Mercury decides. Approval is never guaranteed.
This post is the “escape Wise/PayPal as your only US rail” guide. For the exhaustive LLC + bank playbook, read How to Get a US LLC Bank Account as a Non-US Founder.
Why Wise and PayPal stop feeling like enough
Payment apps are excellent tools. They are a weak substitute for company banking infrastructure once USD revenue gets serious.
Fees and delays on USD client revenue
Every conversion, payout, and hold is a tax on cash flow. When most of your clients pay in USD, “small” percentages and multi-day reviews compound into a real operating cost — and into weekends spent chasing transfers instead of shipping work.
ACH, wires, and “real US routing”
US clients and vendors often expect to pay a company by ACH or wire to a US routing + account number under the business name. Multi-currency accounts can approximate pieces of that. They do not always feel like — or get treated as — a full US business bank account by counterparties, processors, or your own books.
Personal vs company money
Running client revenue through a personal PayPal or a founder-named wallet blurs liability, bookkeeping, and tax reconstruction. A company account under the LLC is how you keep the blast radius clean. (If you already have a foreign-owned US LLC, remember information filings like Form 5472 are a separate story from “do I owe income tax.”)
When a multi-currency account is still useful
Keep the nuance: many founders eventually use both — a US business operating account for company rails, plus a multi-currency layer for FX. The mistake in that Reddit thread is using Wise/PayPal as the only US bank.
What a non-resident actually needs before applying
You do not need US residency. You do need a boring, complete package.
1) A US LLC
Banks underwrite a company, not a lonely foreign passport. Forming a US LLC gives you a legal container that can hold the account, invoice under a US entity name, and separate personal money from business money. Non-US founders can own US LLCs — see Can a Non-US Founder Own a US LLC? and How to Open a US LLC from Abroad.
For banking-heavy use cases, a Standalone Delaware or Wyoming LLC is often cleaner than Instant Series when counterparties want a familiar independent state filing. State choice still matters for fees and ops — not as magic banking fairy dust. See Best State to Form a US LLC as a Foreigner (2026).
2) An EIN — without an SSN
An EIN is the company’s tax ID. It is not your Social Security Number. Foreign owners of US LLCs routinely obtain an EIN without an SSN. OtoCo’s Tax ID add-on is $189 once for supported entities. Full walkthrough: How to Get an EIN for a US LLC Without an SSN and SSN vs EIN vs ITIN for Foreign Founders.
3) A US business mailing address
Your registered agent address is for legal service of process. Most bank applications want a business mailing address that is not “just the RA.” OtoCo’s Virtual Mailing Address is $249/yr (mail scanned) so you have a usable US address for applications and ops.
4) Documents and a boring business story
Expect to show passport/ID for beneficial owners, formation certificate, operating agreement, EIN confirmation, and a plain-English description of what you sell, who pays you, expected volumes, and source of funds. Vague “Web3 consulting / crypto stuff” vibes are how applications stall. Specific invoices and a matching website beat vibes.
Remote fintech path vs traditional branch banks
Traditional US branch banks often still want an in-person visit, an ITIN/SSN relationship, or both. If your constraint is no travel, that category is usually the wrong hunt.
Startup / fintech business accounts are the primary remote path for foreign-owned US LLCs in 2026: online KYC, passport + EIN + formation docs, no branch handshake required. Online does not mean automatic. Underwriting still exists — country of residence, industry risk, thin activity evidence, and mismatched addresses still get accounts declined.
Naming honesty: OtoCo partners with Mercury for application support. We are not going to publish a fake “top 12 banks for non-residents” listicle that pretends every logo is a guaranteed remote option. Categories matter more than brand tourism.
The OtoCo + Mercury path (what $299 buys)
At OtoCo we can do the stack end-to-end — or you can assemble a-la-carte if you already have pieces:
- Form the US LLC (Instant Series or Standalone Delaware / Wyoming).
- EIN without SSN — $189 once.
- Virtual US mailing address — $249/yr.
- Mercury application support — $299 once. OtoCo prepares and submits the application using your entity documents. Mercury controls underwriting and approval.
Company-in-a-Box bundles LLC + EIN + virtual mailbox + Mercury application prep (Standalone from about $1,036 / Instant from about $836 — confirm live checkout). Prefer a focused landing page? Start at US bank account for non-US founders or EIN without SSN.
Product truth, said clearly:
OtoCo prepares the Mercury application package and submits it. Mercury decides. OtoCo is not a bank. Mercury is a fintech company, not an FDIC-insured bank; banking services are provided through Mercury’s partner banks, Members FDIC. The $299 fee is an application service — not a promise of approval, and not a refundable “account fee” if underwriting says no.

How to not fail KYC
- Match the story — website, invoices, and application description should describe the same business.
- Be specific — “B2B design retainers for US SaaS companies, invoiced monthly in USD” beats “online consulting.”
- Source of funds — know where the first deposit comes from and why.
- Expected activity — rough monthly volume and countries of clients/vendors.
- Crypto / fintech / high-risk industries — possible, but vibes-only descriptions die in review. Be precise.
- Address hygiene — don’t invent a residential US address you don’t control; use a real business mailing solution.
If Mercury declines, your LLC and EIN still exist. That is the point of building the stack in the right order — you did not bet the company on one login screen.
After you’re approved (and if you’re not)
Once open: keep personal spending off the company account, reconstruct related-party transfers for tax season, and use the cleaner company story for vendor payouts and processors. Many founders next want Stripe — see How to Get Stripe with a US LLC as a Non-US Founder.

FAQ: remote US business banking for non-residents
Can I open a US business bank account remotely with no travel?
Often yes via startup fintech business accounts after you assemble LLC + EIN + address + docs. Traditional branch banks frequently still want in-person. Remote ≠ guaranteed.
Do I need an SSN or ITIN?
For many remote business banking paths, the company needs an EIN. Founder SSN/ITIN is not always required. Some traditional banks still want ITIN/in-person — different category.
Is Wise or PayPal enough?
Enough to get paid sometimes. Often not enough once you want company ACH/wires, cleaner liability separation, and counterparties that expect a US business account. Many founders use both layers.
Does OtoCo guarantee Mercury approval?
No. We prepare and submit. Mercury underwrites. Say it loud so nobody buys hopium.
Instant LLC vs Standalone for banking?
Both can work. Standalone is often preferred when banks or partners want a familiar independent state-filed LLC. Ask for Standalone if banking is the main next step.
I already have a non-US company — do I still need a US LLC?
Often yes if you want US company banking under a US entity name and cleaner USD client rails. Your home-country company can keep operating; the US LLC is a separate container for US banking and contracts. Get local tax advice on how the two interact.
Build the company. Then bank the company.
You’re not bad at money. You’ve been using consumer remittance tools as a US operating account. Fix the infrastructure: form the LLC, get the EIN, put a real mailing address in place, then apply with a boring honest story.
OtoCo exists so non-US founders don’t have to stitch five vendors and a Discord thread to get there.
